WALKING IN PROVENCE- sightseeing and walking holidays in southern France

Walking holidays in Provence recommends you ditch the car before your destination or even walk from the villa to save the hunt for a parking spot, especially in high season, and reduce your carbon footprint in the process! Many of our suggested walks begin very close to the Villa itself.

Alternatively you can drive a short distance and park in the quiet of the Alpilles and walk down the forest paths to Glanum- one of the largest Roman town remains anywhere- and then visit the old sanatorium where Vincent Van Gogh spent most of the last year of his life, then walk back by a different route to the car. Alternatively you can walk down to the famous St Remy de Provence where Nostradamus was born. There is a wide variety of walking holidays possible here in the south of France.

Trips for sightseeing in and around Avignon are also possible with the car left well outside the town and walking along the River Rhone to the famous bridge, and then inside the city walls to the Palace of the Popes- a huge building made to house the 9 popes who ruled over the Catholic Church for just 60 years when it was too dangerous for them in Rome!

A walking route for sightseeing at Les Baux de Provence is another great day out without the need to move the car from the villa! A path starts a few minutes away from us with mountain paths over the Alpilles and up to the great ramparts of the Mediaeval walled town of Les Baux- one of the most visited places in France outside Paris- the Palace of the Popes mentioned above being the most visited!

Les Baux de Provence has a warren of little cobbled streets with dozens of shops to buy your souvenirs of your walking holiday in southern France. Walk up to the top of Les Baux and visit the castle ruins and museum, with the Yves Brayer art gallery not to be missed. Walk back to the city gates and down a short way to the Cathedrale des Images for a giant 'son et lumiere' spectacle- this year featuring the work of Picasso- last year it was Van Gogh. You can watch huge moving pictures and paintings illuminating the caverns where the famous Provence stone was quarried. After this fantastic experience, there is the walk- this time all downhill!- back to your comfortable accommodation at the villa in time for relaxing around the pool.

It is worth noting that some of the wooded walks are not open during the hot and dry months of July and August.
